If skating is just too two-dimensional for you then the Kitewing should be right up your street. Think hang-glider without the sleeping bag – you just barrel down a hill, hang onto the wing and.. well, that’s it actually. Speed + wing = lift.

They’re not really designed for flying though – the intended use is to pull you along at a fair rate of knots, windsurfer fashion. Looks very cool, if slightly suicidal.

You can pick one up from streetgadgets.com from about £590.

Air travel is a pain and that whole “unpack the laptop and have it screened” scenario is just one more holdup in an already tedious process. Luckily, Skooba Design may have a way around it.

Their “Checkthrough” range of bags are designed to hold the laptop in a separate compartment that can be inspected by airport scanners without unpacking – just put the whole bag through the machine and the airport scanners see the laptop as if it was in one of the trays.

Skooba have just rounded out the range with the addition of backpack and roller style luggage. It might only save a few minutes per trip but it looks pretty handy if you do a lot of travelling.

Announced last week, the VAIO mini W series netbook sports a 10.3” display with a widescreen 1377×768 resolution, the obligatory integrated webcam and microphone and a power saving Intel Atom processor.

The more interesting announcement (to me anyway) comes in the form of it’s bigger brother, the VAIO NW series. These machines have 15.5” X-black displays, HDMI output, ATI Mobility 4570 graphics and Core2 processors. They also have a “quick web access” button that allows you to “get online in seconds without having to fully boot up the PC” – sounds interesting.

Price and availability aren’t available yet but keep an eye on the Sony website, they’ll appear soon enough.

Edit: I’ve just got some more detail from Sony about the “Quick web access” button. It’s based around the Splashtop software and can get you from powered off to web browsing in under 15 seconds. Nice!

Wearing a baseball cap at night wouldn’t be my first thought, but this one has a twist: It includes a couple of LED torch lights under the peak.

Using solar power to charge the batteries during daytime, the included LEDs will provide light for 4 hours on high beam or over a day in the low-power mode.

The electronics are stormproof and the light is angled down so you don’t blind the people around you. If you use head mounted lights a lot, this seems like a useful alternative to the conventional “elastic band around the head” approach they usually take.

They’re available for £29.99 from www.solarlightcap.co.uk in a range of colours and styles.

Actually it’s more a of a phone controller as it can be used to control a media player too, which might make it useful with the new generation of mobiles that have TV connectivity.

The Zeemote works by installing software on the phone that turns the joystick inputs into keypresses / touchpad movements, making it compatible with virtually any game or application. The obvious mobile gaming platform is the Nokia N-Gage (and there will be a package bundling the N-gage phone and zeemote in some territories, although not the UK at the moment) but who knows, you may see other manufacturers making their devices compatible.

If you have the luxury of travelling first you’ll never need one of these. If, on the other hand you travel cattle class like the rest of us then you’re at the mercy of the luggage restrictions airlines seem to be enforcing with increasing zeal.

Enter the Balanzza digital luggage scale. It’s a neat idea and there’s not much more you can say about it, except that it does what it says on the tin. Attach the strap to the handle of your suitcase, lift it and the scale will tell you how much your luggage weighs. You have the choice of imperial or metric units and… well that’s it.

You can buy direct from Balanzza for £20. With excess baggage charges ranging from anywhere upwards of £15, this could pay for itself the first time you use it.
