Memolio revives the photo album

April 23rd, 2009 by Marc in Photography

Memolio

Remember photo albums? You know – books where you store your (wait for it) paper photographs to look at again?

They seem to have fallen out of fashion with the digital age but new company Memolio is attempting to revive the idea with their “virtually indestructible” photo collections.

LG Arena UK Launch

April 2nd, 2009 by Kevin in A/V, Mobile tech, Photography

  KM900 Cube

LG are on a roll at the moment and have just launched yet another phone in the UK, the long awaited KM 900 Arena.  I was lucky enough to be invited along to get some quality hands on time with the Arena at it’s launch.  It’s not often I get to go to a swanky club in London!

It’s available to buy from this weekend on the Orange and T-Mobile networks.  The Arena is also being sold through Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u.  If you want one for free pricing looks to be in the region of £30 to £35 per month on an 18 month contract.

Videos have been available online for sometime now showing it’s much vaunted S Class user interface.  In these videos the phone always looks rather large but in reality I was impressed at just how small and neat it actually is.  I was also impressed at how responsive and intuitive the touch screen interface felt.

Flip Mino HD hits the UK

March 22nd, 2009 by Marc in A/V, Photography, USB

Flip Mino HD

The Flip Mino is a parent-proof, pocket sized point and shoot camcorder recording to internal memory. The original Flip has been around for a while but there’s a new HD version in town, and it comes to Firebox UK on Monday.

Keeping the form factor and ease of use that made the flip a global smash, the Flip Mino HD adds 720p recording (making it the smallest HD camcorder in the world*) and keeps the 60 minute recording time of the original thanks to upgraded storage.

Trech Tech TrekPod Go

March 9th, 2009 by Marc in Photography

TrekPod

If you’ve spent any time behind a camera you’ll have found a situation where you wanted some extra support. Low light, long shutter speed – you need a tripod.

The problem with tripods is they’re a pain to lug around so Trek Tech decided to build one into a hiking staff.

That’s not such a silly idea – hiking staffs are useful accessories if you go walking for any distance, especially over rough terrain. Given that you’ve already got a sturdy pole anyway, why not make it a camera support?

The TrekPod Go does exactly that. It’s a walking pole, monopod and tripod all in the one device. It can be packed small enough to fit in airline carry on luggage and is strong enough to take the weight of an SLR camera.

A magnetic quick-fit system means it converts from walking staff to camera support in no time and it weighs less than a kilo.

It costs £150 from Amazon – which isn’t cheap, but considering you get 3 devices in one it’s not bad value.

Sony launches new Cybershot HX1

March 3rd, 2009 by Marc in Photography

Launched today, the new Sony Cybershot HX1 digital camera incorporates a raft of innovative new technologies that should – if they work as advertised – make capturing the perfect picture easier than ever.

Starting with the basic specs, we have:

  • - 20x optical zoom lens with a large 28mm – 520mm (35mm equivalent) range
  • 9.1MP sensor with “Exmor” CMOS technology and BIONZ processor borrowed from the Alpha DSLR range (note that it’s still a relatively small sensor, not an APS-C size like you’d find in an SLR)
  • 10FPS shooting speed (impressive, this is faster than most DSLRs)
  • 1080p HD video at 30FPS (this is a first for a Cybershot model)
  • 3.0” tilting LCD
  • Optical Steadyshot image stabilisation (essential for handholding those those long range telephoto shots)

[edit – We’ve added a couple of sample panorama images to the end of the post – click on the pictures for the larger version]

Sony introduces 8 new cybershot cameras for PMA

February 23rd, 2009 by Marc in Photography

No sooner do we get one tradeshow out of the way than it’s time to start picking at the press releases for the next one! Coming soon is PMA, one of the two big photographic tradeshows that manufacturers traditionally use to announce products.

True to form, Sony have announced no fewer than 8 new Cybershot models for release at this year’s show.

The T900 (pictured) and T90 cameras are super slimline models with 12.1 MP sensors and 720P movie recording.

The W290 and W270 models are also 12.1MP cameras with 720p movie recording but offer a 5x zoom, starting at an effective 28mm (i.e. a decent wide angle, unusual for a compact)

The W230 drops the spec slightly to 4x zoom with 30mm wide angle and loses the 720p movie recording.

Adobe lightroom 2.3 Release candidate available on adobe labs

January 28th, 2009 by Marc in Photography, Software

Lightroom 2

If you’re even semi-serious about digital photography you owe it to yourself to check out Lightroom – it’s hard to describe the product in a sentence but Adobe pretty much have the niche to themselves, at least until Bibble Labs get around to releasing version 5 of their much-acclaimed RAW converter.
